PROUD SPONSOR OF "THE WOODWRIGHT'S SHOP."
[CAR HORNS HONKING] HEY, WELCOME BACK TO "THE WOODWRIGHT'S SHOP."
I'M ROY UNDERHILL, SO GLAD YOU COULD BE WITH ME AGAIN, AND I'LL TELL YOU, I'VE GOT SOMETHING TO GET OFF MY CHEST.
I AM SO TIRED OF HAVING TO LISTEN TO THE GREAT GURUS OF WOODWORKING TELLING US WHAT KIND OF CHEST WE SHOULD HAVE.
FIRST, IT WAS THE ANARCHIST CHEST, BUT NOW YOU'VE GONE ON TO THIS SLOPE-HEADED DEMON.
WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT, OH, CHRISTOPHER SCHWARZ?
[LAUGHS] WELL, ROY, THIS IS A DUTCH CHEST.
A DUTCH CHEST?
SO, NOW WE'RE SUPPOSED TO MAKE THESE?
ALL RIGHT.
WELL...
I'M GLAD, YOU SAID THERE ARE A LOT OF ADVANTAGES TO THIS ONE, THIS IS FOR OUR OWN GOOD, IS THAT RIGHT?
IT IS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD.
[CHUCKLING] OKAY, VERY GOOD.
I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THEM.
ALL RIGHT.
BUT THIS IS ACTUALLY AN AUTHENTIC DUTCH-STYLE TOOL CHEST, AND LET'S OPEN IT UP.
LET'S SEE WHAT YOU GOT HERE.
ALL RIGHT, WELL, FIRST OFF, YOU CAN SEE THE LID'S SLANTED.
YEAH, YEAH.
AND WE'RE GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THAT, AND WE'LL FIGURE OUT WHY.
BUT IF WE OPEN UP THE LID HERE... LOOK AT THAT.
IT'S LIKE HAVING A WALL DISPLAY.
I LIKE THAT, YOU CAN REACH IN FROM THIS BIG OPENING HERE AND GET EVERYTHING YOU NEED.
YEAH, YOU START UP HERE AT THE TOP.
YOU KNOW, WE HAVE THE LITTLE LEATHER WORK UP HERE THAT HOLDS THE PENCILS, BUT, YOU KNOW, TYPICAL SAW TILL ARRANGEMENT UP HERE FOR THE RIP AND CROSSCUT PANEL SAWS, THAT FIT ONTO THE LID.
OH, I LIKE IT, YEAH.
YEAH, IT'S GREAT, SO, IT IS SORT OF LIKE A WALL CABINET, AND WE MOVE DOWN HERE, AND THIS IS LIKE THE RACK OVER THE WINDOW THAT YOU WOULD HAVE ABOVE THE BENCH.
THAT'S GREAT!
SO, THIS IS A SINGLE RACK, AND A LOT OF DUTCH CHESTS HAD TWO RACKS.
THEY LIKED DOUBLE RACK.
AND SO, YOU CAN KEEP ALL YOUR GAUGES AND LITTLE STUFF HANGING RIGHT HERE, REAL EASY TO GET TO.
AND THEN WE COME DOWN HERE, AND WE HAVE...
VERY EASILY REACHED ARE THE BACKSAWS.
YOU HAVE THE 3 BACKSAWS YOU NEED FOR ALL THE FURNITURE WORK.
RIGHT THERE.
AND, YEAH, JUST SLIDE RIGHT THERE IN THE KERFS, AND YOU CAN SEE THAT THIS HAS EXACTLY, THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF SPACE FOR THE 3 BENCH PLANES THAT ALMOST EVERYBODY USES.
THIS IS GREAT.
JOINTER, JACK, AND SMOOTHER.
AND THEN, OF COURSE, LITTLE BINS FOR JUST JUNK.
YOU KNOW, WE HAVE LOTS OF LITTLE JUNK IN THERE.
YOU GOT YOUR LITTLE BLOCK PLANE IN THERE.
IN MY HOLSTER, YES, SO, I AM READY TO DUEL AT ANY TIME.
SO, THIS IS GREAT, I MEAN, EVERYTHING IS THERE, BUT IT'S A VERY SHALLOW CHEST, I MEAN, IT COMES DOWN HERE AND STOPS.
I CAN'T GET ANY DEEPER THAN THAT, SO, WHAT DO WE DO THERE?
FIRST OFF, THAT'S A REAL ADVANTAGE, BECAUSE WHEN I'M WORKING HERE AT THE BENCH, I CAN JUST REACH IN, AND I DON'T HAVE TO GO WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR.
THERE'S LESS STOOPING WITH THE DUTCH CHEST, BUT IT GIVES US A COMPARTMENT BELOW, AND SO, WHAT WE DO HERE IS WE SLIDE OPEN THE LOCK, OH, OKAY.
YES, VERY NICE.
SO, YOU HAVE A LITTLE... AH, THERE WE GO!
AND THAT SLAT THAT WENT DOWN THROUGH SLID INTO THIS LITTLE OPENING RIGHT HERE.
YEP!
ALL RIGHT.
SLIDES DOWN AND LOCKS INTO A SMALL LITTLE MORTIS AT THE BASE HERE.
SO, IT KEEPS GOING DOWN, AND THEN IT LOCKS INTO THAT MORTIS... [LAUGHING] SO THAT WHEN THE LID'S CLOSED IT CAN'T COME OUT.
SO, THAT'S THE SECURITY MECHANISM.
AND WHAT'S COOL ABOUT IT, I THINK, IS THAT I THINK THAT THAT IS THE EVOLUTIONARY PRECEDENT TO THE GERSTNER CHEST.
OH, WHICH I HAVE RIGHT HERE.
YES.
ALL RIGHT, ALL RIGHT.
AND THIS IS THE... [GROANS] THESE WERE MADE IN OHIO, AND ARE MORE FOR MACHINISTS THAN FOR WOODWORKERS.
[LAUGHS] BUT IT WORKS.
BUT THAT'S A CLASSIC PATTERN THERE, AS THE LID OPENS UP, AND IT'S NOT SLOPED.
BUT THE LID OPENS UP, AND THE PINS RELEASE, AND THEN THE FRONT DROPS DOWN, AND YOU'VE GOT ALL YOUR DRAWERS.
DO THEY DO THESE WITH DRAWERS IN THEM?
SOMETIMES THEY WOULD HAVE DRAWERS, BUT I AM NOT A DRAWER GUY.
[LAUGHS] I THINK DRAWERS CONCEAL.
AND SO, I PREFER WIDE-OPEN SPACES.
ALL RIGHT.
AND SO, IF WE GO DOWN HERE, AND WE LOOK HERE, YOU CAN SEE THAT WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS JUST WIDE OPEN.
NO FITTING, NO TILLS, NO NOTHING.
AND THIS GIVES ME A LOT MORE SPACE THAN A TYPICAL CHEST WOULD, IF I HAD TO SHARE IT WITH DIVIDERS.
BUT WHAT THE GENIUS OF THIS DUTCH DESIGN IS, IN MY OPINION, IS THAT THIS DEPTH IS JUST PERFECT.
IT'S LIKE AN 11-1/4-INCH DEPTH, AND SO, THAT ALLOWS YOUR VERY... FRONT TO BACK?
FRONT TO BACK.
AND SO, YOU HAVE THIS GREAT ARRANGEMENT, WHERE, LIKE, THE MOLDING PLANES JUST ALL FIT RIGHT IN, THE PLOW PLANES, THE RABBET PLANES, ALL WILL FIT IN THIS REALLY STANDARD DEPTH.
YOU CAN SEE THE PROFILES HERE ON THE BACK.
YOU KNOW WHICH PLANE YOU'RE LOOKING AT, AND THEN REACH IN, AND JUST TAKE IT ON OUT.
VERY, VERY CONVENIENT.
AND AS I'VE BEEN WORKING OUT OF THIS CHEST FOR THE LAST YEAR, I'VE JUST BEEN REALLY AMAZED AT HOW MUCH JUNK IT REALLY, REALLY HOLDS.
[LAUGHS] HOW HEAVY IT CAN BECOME.
IT CAN BE, BUT IT CAN BE HANDLED BY ONE PERSON, TOO.
THAT'S THE OTHER THING.
OH, OKAY.
IT'S BECAUSE IT'S ONLY ABOUT 25 INCHES WIDE, I CAN LIFT THIS UP BY MYSELF, WHEN I'VE BEEN EATING A GOOD BREAKFAST, AND IT'S NO PROBLEM.
SO, IT'S REALLYT JUST A REALLY SMART, SMART DESIGN.
AND IT'S GOT SOMETHING FOR YOU TO PUT YOUR STICKERS FROM EVERYWHERE YOU TRAVEL.
EVERYWHERE I GO.
YEAH, YEAH.
BUT THE BIGGESTT ADVANTAGE THAT WE HAVEN'T TALKED ABOUT, THE ONE THAT GETS PEOPLE TO BUILD THIS WHEN I FINALLY TELL THEM, IS THATT ENGLISH CHEST?
40 HOURS OF WORK.
DUTCH CHEST?
MAYBE 16 TO DO THIS.
WHY IS THAT?
WELL, THAT'S BECAUSE THE JOINERY IS JUST MUCH MORE SIMPLIFIED THAN THE ENGLISH CHEST.
AND IF YOU LOOK HERE ON THE SIDE, OVER HERE... UH-HUH.
WE CAN SEE HOW SOME OF THAT JOINERY WORKS.
NOW, THE ENGLISH CHEST, AS YOU KNOW, IS DOVETAILED EVERYWHERE.
THIS WOULD BE DOVETAILED AROUND THE BACK AND DOVETAILED ON THIS WALL.
IT'D BE DOVETAILED EVERYWHERE, BUT WE DON'T HAVE THAT HERE.
WE ONLY HAVE DOVETAILS IN ONE LOCATION.
THIS IS SCREWED ON.
YEAH, THIS IS SCREWED ON.
THE BACK IS SCREWED ON.
ALL RIGHT.
AND THE DOVETAILS ARE ONLY HERE AT THE BOTTO.
OH, WELL, THAT DOWN HERE IS WHERE IT WOULD COME APART WHEN YOU'RE LIFTING ALL THOSE HEAVY TOOLS.
SO, YOU'VE GOT THE DOVETAIL SPLAYED OUT DOWN THERE, AND THAT LOCKS THAT BOTTOM ON.
YOU DON'T WANT YOUR BOTTOM TO FALL OUT.
RIGHT, AND THEN THE SIDES, OF COURSE, YOU'RE GOING TO SPLIT YOUR SIDES.
THAT'S ALL RIGHT BECAUSE THAT'S A DOOR ANYWAY.
YEAH, BUT WE DO HAVE SOME MORE JOINERY HERE.
SO, THAT SHELF THAT YOU POINTED TO, THE SHALLOW SHELF, YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE NAILS ARE HERE IS THAT THERE'S A DADO THERE, AND THE SHELF GOES INTO THE DADO, AND THAT PRETTY MUCH TAKES CARE OF THE JOINERY ON THE SIDES, ONCE YOU GET THIS SLOPE CUT.
SO, YOU'VE GOT A SOCKET HERE FOR THE SHELF THAT'S AT THIS LEVEL GOING IN THIS VERTICAL BOARD.
YES, AND THAT'S CREATED BY THE FRONT, WHICH IS JUST SCREWED ON.
ALL RIGHT, AND THE BACK IS SIMPLY, WHAT?
TONGUE AND GROOVE.
IT'S A TONGUE AND GROOVE LIKE THIS, OKAY.
SO, HERE'S A TONGUE AND GROOVE BOARD.
IT'S GOT THE LITTLE BEADING UP THERE ON TOP, BUT THAT'S WHAT YOU'VE DONE BACK HERE.
DONE TONGUE AND GROOVE, AND THAT ALLOWS THAT TO EXPAND AND CONTRACT A LITTLE BIT, BECAUSE IT WILL BE TAKEN UP, BY THE TONGUE AND THE GROOVE, BUT WHAT ABOUT ON THE FRONT?
YEAH, THE TONGUE AND GROOVE ALLOWS FOR THAT CROSS-GRAIN EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION WE NEED, AND THAT'S WHY THAT DOESN'T SPLIT.
THE GRAIN'S GOING UP ON THE END AND ACROSS ON THIS END, WHICH IS EXPANDING.
WHICH IS A NO-NO USUALLY.
YEAH, YOU NEVER DO THAT.
YOU NEVER DO THAT.
BUT YOU DO.
BUT YOU DO, YEAH.
AND THE WAY YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH IT IS YOU USE PINE, AND THE PINE, ONCE IT DRIES, SOFT WOODS MOVE MUCH LESS THAN HARD WOODS IN GENERAL, ANDT I HAVEN'T SEEN A DUTCH CHEST YET THAT HAS A SPLIT THERE, AND THAT'S JUST BECAUSE THE PINE DOESN'T MOVE AS MUCH.
BUT ALSO, YOU'RE USING SCREWS, OR NAILS, OR SOMETHING HERE, TOO, AND THAT GIVES A LITTLE BIT OF MOVEMENT.
IT DOES, ESPECIALLY NAILS WILL ALLOW A LOT MORE GIVE, BUT THE SCREWS WILL GIVE YOU A LITTLE GIVE.
ALL RIGHT, AND SO, DOVETAILS AT THE BOTTOM, AND A DADO THERE.
MM-HMM.
AND AN ANGLE.
AND AN ANGLE, OKAY.
THIS 30-DEGREE-ANGLE, AND THAT'S FOR THIS LID.
NOW, I'VE WORKED ON THAT, BECAUSE THAT ANGLE IS WHAT MAKES THIS SUCH A COOL THING, TO MY THINKING, IN THAT, UNLIKE THIS CHEST, WHICH IS GREAT.
YEAH, YEAH.
NICE FLAT LID IN THIS TRADITIONAL THING, BUT I CAN NEVER GET INTO IT BECAUSE I GOT TOO MANY THINGS TO GET OFF MY CHEST ALL THE TIME, BECAUSE IT JUST FILLS UP, BUT THAT SLOPE LID CAN'T DO IT.
SO, I'VE BEEN STUDYING THAT SLOPE, AND WE'RE GOING TO DO THE LAYOUT.
HOW ABOUT THAT?
OKAY!
SO, YOU'LL DO PTHE LAYOUT FOR THAT SLOPE BOARD FOR THE ENDS OF THE DUTCH TOOL CHEST... [GROANING] OUT OF ONE BOARD.
NOW YOU SAID YOU WANTED TO DO ONE BOARD, AND I FIGURED POUT THE LAYOUT FOR DOING THIS, TO CUT A DIAGONAL ACROSS HERE, SO WE GET BOTH END BOARDS.
MMMM.
BUT YOU ALSO SAID THIS IS DOVETAIL, AND YOU'VE ONLYP LAID OUT DOVETAILS ON ONE END.
YEAH, WE'RE GOING TO STEAM-BEND IT RIGHT HERE, AND BEND THEM AROUND.
[LAUGHS] NO, YOU'RE NOT!
OH!
BUT, ANYWAY, I GUESS THAT'LL MAKE SENSE LATER.
ALL RIGHT, SO, I'VE GOT A CENTERLINE.
SO, HERE'S OUR BOARD.
OKAY.
I'VE GOT A CENTERLINE ALL THE WAY ACROSS.
AND SO, THIS IS THE WAY I FIGURED TO DO IT USING A COMPASS.
SO, WE'RE GOING TO DO THIS WITHOUT ANY, YOU KNOW, FANCY MEASURING EQUIPMENT, JUST A COMPASS?
JUST A COMPASS, SO, THIS IS COMPASS ROWS WORK NOW.
I'M TRYING TO THINK OF THE OTHER WAYS YOU COULD DO IT.
SEE, I'M GOING TO FIND THE CENTER BY TRIAL AND ERROR.
MM-HMM.
SO, I JUST KIND OF ZERO IN BY READJUSTING THE DIVIDERS UNTIL WE GET THEM RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS.
COME ON.
YOU CAN DO IT.
I CAN.
NOW, THERE'S FORMULAS, I GUESS WE COULD USE A FRAMING SQUARE.
MM-HMM.
WHAT ELSE?
WE GOT PROTRACTORS.
PROTRACTORS AND ALL THAT.
WHERE THEY'RE ALREADY PROGRAMMED IN.
ALL RIGHT, SO, I THINK I'M GOOD.
I'M GOING TO FIND THAT CENTER BY JUST TUNING IT RIGHT THERE WITH THAT LITTLE SCREW.
BUT THIS IS MORE FUN.
YEAH, I THINK SO.
OKAY, NOW I'VE GOT THE DIVIDERS HERE.
THIS PAIR OF DIVIDERS IS NOW SET FOR HALF OF THE WIDTH OF THE BOARD.
I'VE GOT A LINE ACROSS THE BOARD RIGHT IN ITS CENTER.
AND HERE WE GO, I'M GOING TO NOW PUT AN EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE BY RUNNING TWO ARCS.
OOPS, I MISSED, LET'S SEE.
EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE.
SO, EACH LEG IS THE SAME.
THANK YOU, ALL RIGHT.
NOW IF I DRAW THESE OUT, I SHOULD HAVE AN EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE, AND THOSE INTERNAL ANGLES ARE...WHAT?
THAT'S GOING TO BE 60 DEGREES.
MY STUDENT, YES, OKAY, SO, THAT'S 60 DEGREES IN THERE.
MM-HMM.
IN THAT OPENING.
SO, EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE, BUT WE WANT WHAT DEGREES?
WE WANT HALF THAT.
WE WANT 30.
ALL RIGHT, SO, WHAT WE'LL DO IS...
HERE'S, AGAIN, A 60-DEGREE ANGLE HERE.
WE'RE GOING TO BISECT THAT AND FIND THE MIDDLE OF IT.
SO, HERE WE GO.
OKAY.
WE'LL DO IT THE SAME WAY.
YEAH.
ADD IN AN EXTRA BOARD.
ALL RIGHT.
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN, LIKE, THE... WHAT IS IT?
THE GARDNER'S HUT [INDISTINCT].
IN ONE THAT'S DONE-- SEE, WHAT I DID, WAS, POF COURSE, PUT AN ARC FROM THIS POINT, AND AN ARC FROM THIS POINT.
MM-HMM.
AND NOW, THAT'S ANOTHER EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE, BUT WE'RE NOT INTERESTED IN THAT.
WHAT WE'RE INTERESTED IN IS USING THAT AS THE ZERO POINT, AND THIS, HERE, AS THE ZERO POINT TO PUT A 30-DEGREE LINE RIGHT THROUGH THE CENTER OF OUR BOARD.
THERE WE ARE.
BRILLIANT!
[CHUCKLES] THERE'S OUR CENTERLINE, RIGHT THERE.
AND SO, IT GOES THROUGH THE MIDDLE, AND IT CUTS AT 30, AND THAT'S GOING TO GIVE US BOTH PIECES, BUT THERE ARE WHOLE, YOU KNOW, BARNS, BIG BUILDINGS LAID OUT USING JUST THE COMPASS ROSE SYSTEM.
YEAH, I THINK IT'S REALLY QUITE AMAZING WHAT YOU CAN DO.
SO, IF YOU'RE IN THE WOODS WITH JUST A COMPASS... [LAUGHS] I LIKE THAT, OKAY.
SO, WE'RE GOING TO GET THIS SAWN OUT.
ALL RIGHT, THIS IS THE QUESTION NOW.
DO YOU RIP THIS, OR DO YOU CROSSCUT IT?
NOW, WHAT DID YOU PICK?
THE SHARP ONE.
AH, OKAY, SO, THERE'S HOW YOU MAKE YOUR DECISION.
THIS ISV ACTUALLY THE CROSSCUT, BUT YOU DON'T THINK I SHOULD USE A CROSSCUT.
WELL, IF IT WERE A LITTLE STEEPER... YOU'RE LESS THAN 45 DEGREES, SO, IT'S A CROSSCUT, ISN'T IT?
BUT IF IT WAS 45, IF IT WAS STEEPER THAN 45, YOU'D BE RIPPING.
YEAH, AT SOME POINT IT BECOMES A RIP CUT.
YEAH, NO, I THINK THIS IS STILL A CROSSCUT.
ALL RIGHT.
VERY IMPORTANT [LAUGHS] BECAUSE THERE'S A DIFFERENCE IN THE TWO.
AHH!
ALL RIGHT.
MORE IMPORTANTLY THAN THAT IS IT'S DONE.
ALL RIGHT, NOW IT'S DONE.
ALL RIGHT, SO, WHAT WE'VE GOT IS... LET'S JUST SHOW ON THE ACTUAL CHEST HERE WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT.
THESE ARE THE ENDS RIGHT NOW.
SO, WE DO THIS AS THE TWO ENDS OF THE CHEST NOW.
SO, WE'VE GOT TO DO THE DOVETAILS AT THE BOTTOM AND WHAT ELSE?
THE... DADO!
DADO IN HERE, OKAY.
SO, WE'LL COME ON BACK, BUT YOU'VE ONLY LAID OUT ON ONE SIDE.
YEAH.
THAT BOGGLES ME.
IT BOGGLES, IT BOGGLES.
YEAH, WHENEVER I CUT DOVETAILS.
WHENEVER POSSIBLE, WITH ESPECIALLY TRUE DOVETAILS, BUT ALSO WITH DRAWERS, IS I'M GOING TO GANG CUT.
I MUCH PREFER TO GANG CUT, SO, WE'VE GOT TO GET THESE LINED UP.
AND WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT I'M GOING TO CUT THE TAILS ON BOTH ENDS AT THE SAME TIME, AND THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE WHEN YOU CUT TAILS FIRST.
SO, IF YOU ARE A PINS-FIRST CUTTER, IF YOU ARE A CONTINENTAL... A CONTINENTAL EUROPEAN.
YES, EUROPEAN, THEN YOU ARE GOING TO... OH, THANK YOU.
YOU'RE GOING TO CUT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE JOINT FIRST.
YOU'RE GOING TO CUT THOSE PINS FIRST, BUT I HAVE MORE ENGLISH IN ME, I GUESS, AND SO, I PREFER TO CUT THE TAILS FIRST, BUT THIS IS ONE OF THE BIG ADVANTAGES TO CUTTING TAILS FIRST, BECAUSE YOU CAN SAVE HALF THE TIME... WOW!
YEAH, BY CUTTING THIS.
AND THAT'S ONE ADVANTAGE.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT, BUT IT'S TRUE.
A LOT OF THE CONTINENT, THEY'LL CUT, AND MANY PEOPLE STILL LIKE TO CUT THE PINS, THE SMALLER ELEMENTS FIRST.
WE'LL SEE THAT IN A SECOND, YEAH.
YEAH.
ALL RIGHT, SO HERE HE GOES, ALL RIGHT.
YOU'VE GOT YOUR DOVETAIL SAW, AND ALL THIS IS GREAT, BECAUSE EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO BUILD A DUTCH TOOL CHEST FITS IN A DUTCH TOOL CHEST.
SO, HE'S GOT HIS DOVETAIL SAW COMING DOWN, AND MAKING ALL OF THE RIGHT-HAND CUTS FIRST.
THE OTHER BIG VADVANTAGE I LIKE ABOUT GANG CUTTING, ESPECIALLY WHEN I TEACH PEOPLE HOW TO CUT DOVETAILS, IS THAT I FOUND WHEN YOU ARE SAWING ACROSS TWO THICKNESSES OF BOARDS, IT'S MUCH EASIER FOR THE BEGINNER TO KEEP HIS OR HER SAW STRAIGHT ACROSS.
IT DOESN'T WOBBLE AS MUCH IN THE KERF AS IT WOULD ACROSS A SINGLE THICKNESS.
THEY'VE GOT A LONGER BASELINE TO FOLLOW WITH THEIR SAW.
AND SO, THEY HAVE A MUCH BETTER EXPERIENCE ON THE FIRST TIME OUT, SO... YEAH.
THERE'S ONE OTHER WAY THAT YOU CAN SPEED YOURSELF UP EVEN MORE THAN THIS.
AND THAT IS I CAN CUT MY TIME IN 1/4 BY HANDING THE SAW TO YOU.
[LAUGHS] OKAY.
I DON'T HAVE A LAYOUT LINE ON THIS.
ALL RIGHT, BUT I'LL TRY.
IT IS SO FUNNY.
I'M JUST GOING TO EYEBALL YOURS.
THAT'S OKAY.
YOU KNOW, YOU WATCH FRANK KLAUSZ DO THIS, AND HE JUST DOESN'T HAVE ANY LAYOUT LINES.
HE KNOWS THE ANGLES.
YEAH.
HE'S DONE IT SO MUCH.
CHANNEL YOUR INNER KLAUSZ.
YEAH, HE'S GOT A NICE...
THERE YOU GO.
I'M GETTING A LITTLE TOO STEEP, BUT, THERE, THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.
YOU'VE GOT THAT LONGER BASELINE.
MM-HMM.
YOU ONLY HAVE TO LAY OUT ONCE IF YOU LAY OUT AT ALL.
WELL, THAT'S RIGHT, YEAH!
AND THEN, THE OTHER BIG ADVANTAGE IS IF YOU COPE OUT THE SAW WITH A BOW SAW, YOU CAN GANG COPE, WHICH... OH MAN, I'M NOT DOING THAT.
NO?
I'M SORRY, I'VE GOT TO DRAW THE LINE SOMEWHERE.
OKAY, WELL, I GANG COPE.
I'M A GANG COPER.
WOW, ALL RIGHT.
YEAH, BUT I DON'T WANT TO SCARE YOU, SO, WE'LL JUST... WE'LL DO IT CHISEL STYLE.
ALL RIGHT.
GOOD, THANK YOU.
ALL RIGHT, SO, THAT'S IT.
NOW, THESE LITTLE SPACES IN HERE, THE SMALL SPACES WHERE THE PINS ARE GOING TO GO, AND THE BIG SPACES ARE THE TAILS IN THIS CASE.
AND IT'S SO FUNNY, THIS LITTLE SAW, EVEN THOUGH WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE BIG RIP SAWS, WE THINK ABOUT RIPPING, THESE ARE SHARPENED WITH RIPPED TEETH.
A DOVETAIL SAW IS RIP-TOOTHED, SQUARE ACROSS, LITTLE CHISELS THAT CUT DOWN THE GRAIN.
AND THAT'S WHAT WE MEAN BY "RIPPING."
ALL RIGHT, SO, MOVING RIGHT ALONG, SIR.
YOU'VE GOT THEM BOTH DONE, ALL RIGHT!
YEAH, MAN, WE'RE HALF WAY THERE.
ALL RIGHT, SO, NOW... [CHUCKLES] YOU'RE GONNA TAKE IT OUT WITH THE CHISEL.
YEAH, WE CAN DO THIS, SO, I WON'T COPE.
ALL RIGHT.
I WILL JUST CHOP OUT.
SO, I'M GOING TO CHOP STRAIGHT DOWN, STAYING AWAY FROM THE BASELINE AS BEST I CAN.
AND CUT BACK.
CUT BACK.
TRY TO CUT HALFWAY THROUGH.
ALL RIGHT.
I'LL FLIP THAT OVER.
LOOK AT THAT, AUTO-FLIPPING BOARD.
YEAH, I KNOW!
WHAT WILL THEY THINK OF NEXT?
THAT CUTS DOWN YOUR TIME.
YES.
AND, AGAIN, AWAY FROM THE BASELINE.
AWAY FROM THE BASELINE.
SO, THAT PRETTY MUCH GOT US THROUGH.
ALL RIGHT.
AND SO, I CAN START CHOPPING BACK TOWARDS MY BASELINE.
I TRY TO REMOVE HALF THE WASTE WITH EACH CHOP, AND GO HALFWAY DOWN THROUGH THE TAIL BOARD, AND THAT USUALLY KEEPS ME FROM CROSSING MY BASELINE, SO... ALL RIGHT, AND THERE YOU GO.
YEAH.
POP THOSE OUT A LITTLE BIT.
AND DON'T CUT YOURSELF.
NO.
NEVER HAPPENS!
[LAUGHING] NO!
I WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT THAT FEELS LIKE.
YEAH, I KNOW.
THERE YOU GO.
SO, THAT PRETTY MUCH DOES IT.
ALL RIGHT, AND THEN THAT POPS OUT THERE.
SO, WHAT WE DO IS, OF COURSE, DO THIS ALL THE WAY ALONG, AND THAT'S WHERE THE PINS ARE GOING TO COME THROUGH.
DO ALL OF THESE, AND THEN--AH, YOU'VE ALREADY GOT IT!
WELL, IF YOU WANT TO SEE HOW THE PINS WILL BE TRANSFERRED, THEN ON THE BOTTOM BOARD YOU JUST, YEAH, PUT IT ON THERE AND WE'D GET A KNIFE OR PENCIL OR WHATEVER OR AN AWL... AND JUST TRACE THAT ON THERE, ESSENTIALLY.
OR YOU JUST STICK THE SAW BACK IN THE KERF AS I AM WONT TO DO.
YOU STICK THE SAW BACK IN THE KERF, AND THEN PULL BACK, AND IT WILL LEAVE THE PATTERN OF THIS OPENING THAT YOU'VE MADE RIGHT HERE, AND THEN YOU CUT THAT TO FIT IT TOGETHER.
ALL RIGHT, SO, NOW, THAT LEAVES US THE... ♪ DADO ♪ [CHUCKLES] AND YOU'VE GOT TO KNOW WHERE TO PUT THE DADO, THAT GROOVE THAT SUPPORTS THAT INTERMEDIATE SHELF.
IT'S A VERY, VERY STRONG BOX.
YOU'VE GOT DOVETAILED AT THE BOTTOM, AND A DADOED-IN SHELF HERE, AND THAT BACK, AND THEN THE LID DOESN'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING BECAUSE THESE TWO BOARDS ARE MAKING THE STRONG BOX.
YEAH, EXACTLY, BUT THE THING IS WE DON'T REALLY WANT TO MEASURE.
NO.
THE THING THAT'S GOING TO GUIDE OUR DADO IS OUR JOINTER PLANE.
OH!
WHY IS THAT?
WELL, WE'RE NOT GOING TO CUT IT WITH THE JOINTER PLANE, BUT WE'RE GOING TO USE IT, TO LAY IT OUT, BECAUSE IT'S THE TALLEST TOOL IN THE TOP PART OF THE CABINET.
OH, OKAY!
I GOT YOU.
AND SO, WE ARE GOING TO USE THIS TOP CORNER, AND PUT THE JOINTER PLANE PHYSICALLY ON THE WORK SO THAT THE HORN OF THE TOTE AVOIDS THE LID, AND THEN WE'RE JUST GOING TO MARK WHERE THE TOP OF THAT DADO IS GOING TO GO WITH A PENCIL LINE.
ALL RIGHT, SO, YOU KNOW YOU'RE NOW ENSURED THAT YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE ROOM FOR THE... FOR THE TALLEST TOOL AT THE FRONT OF THE CABINET.
SO, THAT'S THE LAYOUT, I PREFER NOT TO MEASURE.
[LAUGHS] MEASURING IS THE ENEMY OF ACCURACY.
YEAH, THERE YOU GO, ALL RIGHT.
SO, WE'RE JUST GOING TO SCRIBE... SQUARE A LINE ACROSS.
A LINE ACROSS.
ALL RIGHT, THAT'S ONE LINE.
THAT'S ONE LINE, THAT'S THE TOP OF THE DADO.
TO GET THE BOTTOM OF THE DADO, WE DON'T WANT TO MEASURE BECAUSE MEASURING'S BAD, AND SO, WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO IS WE'RE GOING TO SET, AND I'M GOING TO SET IT RIGHT ON THAT LINE, BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, LAST TIME...
OKAY.
YEAH, I'M NOT GOING TO TALK ABOUT LAST TIME.
CAN YOU DO IT SIDEWAYS?
BECAUSE I'VE GOT ROUGH, ROUGH SAWING.
YEAH?
LAY IT WITH THE SIDE GRAIN?
ALL RIGHT.
JUST FOR MY SAKE.
FOR YOUR SAKE.
I'M ON THE LINE.
ALL RIGHT, ALL RIGHT.
I'M READY.
AND I JUST RUN THE LINE THERE.
YES.
ALL RIGHT, THERE WE GO.
TA-DA!
ALL RIGHT, SO, NOW WE'VE GOT A LINE WITH WHERE THE DADO GOES IN THERE.
MM-HMM, AND A LITTLE X THAT MEANS "CUT ME."
[LAUGHS] SO, WE'RE GOING TO SCRIBE THE DEPTH OF THE DADO ON THE FRONT.
YEAH, ALL RIGHT.
AND AT THE BACK, YOU DON'T NEED A LOT OF DEPTH.
THIS IS A QUARTER INCH, AND THAT'S MORE THAN ENOUGH TO SUPPORT THE SHELF NO MATTER HOW MUCH WEIGHT YOU PUT ON IT.
NOW, THERE ARE LOTS OF WAYS TO CUT THIS DADO.
MY FAVORITE WAY TO CUT DADOS IS WITH SOME SORT OF CROSSCUTTING SAW.
THAT'S A CARCASS SAW.
YEAH, WHERE DID THAT GO?
OH, YOUR HOLDFAST.
YOUR HOLDFAST, THERE WE GO.
AND PUT THAT UP AGAINST OUR DOG.
ALL RIGHT.
AND SLAP THAT.
NO, I HIT IT WITH A HAMMER.
OH, MAN.
NEVER HIT METAL ON METAL.
[LAUGHS] AND SO, WHAT WE'RE GOING zTO DO IS WE'RE GOING TO CUT ON THE INSIDE OF THE LINE.
OH, REALLY?
OKAY.
RIGHT, BECAUSE THE PENCIL WENT ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE OBJECT, OKAY.
NOW, IF I WERE A LITTLE SCARED BECAUSE I'D NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE, I WOULD'VE CLAMPED A BATON OR THE SHELF ITSELF RIGHT ON THIS LINE, AND USED IT AS A GUIDE FOR THE SAW.
SOMETHING RIGHT THERE TO JUST TRACE AGAINST IT.
AND SO, INSTEAD, I AM HOTDOGGING IT HERE, SO, I'M JUST GOING TO NIBBLE, AND BLOW, NIBBLE AND BLOW.
THE NIBBLING JUST GETS THE SAW TEETH INTO THE WORK, AND THE BLOWING KEEPS THE SAWDUST OFF OF THE LINE.
SO, I'M GOING TO GO DOWN HERE UNTIL I HIT MY LINE DOWN THERE.
PRETTY CLOSE.
YEAH.
NO?
A LITTLE BIT, ONE MORE, ONE MORE.
ONE MORE?
OKAY.
IS THAT ONE?
YEAH, THAT'S ONE.
AND THEN WE'RE GOING TO DO IT BACK HERE.
YOU'RE AT THE START OF THE NIBBLE.
YEAH, I'M NIBBLING.
THERE'S THE BLOW, THE NIBBLE AND BLOW.
[LAUGHS] OKAY, I CAN TELL THEM APART.
YEAH?
YES.
YOU WENT TO COLLEGE.
I WENT TO SCHOOL FOR THAT.
BUT THERE ARE OTHER WAYS TO CUT THESE, RIGHT?
YEAH, WELL, THIS IS ONE.
HERE, THIS IS A DADO PLANE, AND IT'S GOT THOSE TWO LITTLE NICKING LINES RIGHT THERE.
TWO LITTLE NICKERS, WHAT DO YOU CALL THEM?
SPURS, I GUESS.
CROSSGRAIN NICKERS.
YEAH, SPURS.
A SPUR THERE AND A SPUR THERE TO DELINEATE THE WIDTH.
AND THEN A SKEWED IRON THAT FITS DOWN IN THERE, AND A DEPTH STOP, BUT YOU DON'T LIKE THESE.
NO, I DON'T LIKE THEM.
I MEAN, I USE THEM, BUT THE SPURS DON'T PENETRATE HARDWOODS VERY WELL.
AND SO, THEY'RE KIND OF A PAIN TO USE WITH HARD WOODS.
THEY WORK GREAT FOR SOFT WOODS.
SO, WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO NOW IS WE'RE GOING TO JUST RIP THIS STUFF OUT WITH A CHISEL.
SO, I'M GOING TO GET THE CHISEL AS LOW AS I DARE, AND THEN I'M JUST GOING TO KNOCK IN, AND JUST TRY TO TAKE OUT AS MUCH AS I CAN, BEVEL UP, WHICH IS MORE AGGRESSIVE, AND THEN IF I NEED SOME MORE CONTROL... OH, OKAY, BEVEL DOWN, SO YOU CAN ROCK OFF.
YEAH, SO I CAN ROCK OFF THAT BEVEL AND GET IN WHERE I WANT, AND THEN I DON'T WANT TO SPLINTER OUT THAT.
SO, I'M GOING TO COME IN HERE REAL FAST AND JUST TAP IN JUST TO TAKE THAT OUT SO IT DOESN'T SPLINTER.
RIGHT, OKAY.
VERY SIMPLE, SO ONCE I GET IT CLOSE...
SO, THAT'S CLOSE.
[LAUGHS] AND ROUGH.
AND NOBODY'S GOING TO SEE THAT BOTTOM, SO THAT'S PROBABLY DONE, ACTUALLY.
THAT IS A ROUGH BOTTOM.
I GOT A LITTLE AGGRESSIVE THERE, BUT I WANT TO SMOOTH THE BOTTOM.
ALL RIGHT, WHAT HAVE YOU GOT?
WHAT'S THIS CALLED?
SO, WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS A ROUTER PLANE, AND THIS IS A METAL ROUTER PLANE.
THEY ALSO CAME IN WOOD, AND THE WOODEN ONES, YOU KNOW, THEY HAVE THIS ONE IRON IN THEM.
IT IS LIKE A BENT CHISEL, AND THE OLD ONES WOULD BE CALLED AN OLD WOMAN'S TOOTH, OR A HAG'S TOOTH.
VERY UNKIND NAME.
A VERY UNKIND NAME, BUT IT DOES KIND OF LOOK LIKE IT.
OH, NEVER MIND.
OKAY, OKAY, OKAY.
SO, WE'RE GOING TO THRUST MIGHTILY WITH MY HAND ON THE OLD WOMAN'S TOOTH.
OUCH!
YEAH, POOR WOMAN.
AND THIS IS LIKE A CHISEL WITH A DEPTH STOP.
WOW!
SO, EVERYTHING IT CUTS IS JUST RIGHT TO THAT DEPTH.
SO, YOU CAN GET A VERY SMOOTH AND CLEAN BOTTOM, AND THERE'S NOTHING BETTER WHEN IT COMES TO JOINERY.
YEAH.
SO, THAT'S GOT TO FIT TIGHT, NOT GOING TO HAVE ANY AIRSPACE, SINCE YOU COULD EVEN GLUE THIS SHOULD YOU WISH TO PRETEND THAT THAT'S GOING TO HELP A BIT.
YEAH, EXACTLY, THAT'S JUST PRETEND GLUE.
THAT'S LIKE YOU HAVE TOO MUCH GLUE.
YEAH, MY HOLDFAST IS IN THE WAY THERE.
BECAUSE THIS IS END GRAIN TO END GRAIN.
BUT NOW LET'S CHECK THAT... YEAH, GRAB THAT SHELF.
WELL, I'LL SEE IF I CAN.
IT'S WAY AT THE BACK.
OH, YOU CAN DO IT, ROY, YOU CAN DO IT.
OKAY, I'LL DO IT.
OKAY, THANK YOU.
ALL RIGHT.
ALL RIGHT.
SO, NOW, THAT SHOULD FIT IN IF WE TRACE THAT LINE RIGHT.
YEAH.
AND IF IT DIDN'T, THIS MALLET WILL SEE THAT IT DOES.
YEAH, AH, GET THE HAND OUT OF THE WAY.
ALL RIGHT.
THAT MALLET IS BLOODTHIRSTY.
OH, THERE, OKAY, WELL, IT FITS PERFECTLY, ANYWAY.
[LAUGHS] SO, THERE WE GO.
SO, THAT'S THE SHELF IN THERE, AND WE'D HAVE THE DOVETAILS AT THE BOTTOM, AND THE SHELF.
LET'S STAND THIS UP LIKE IT WILL LOOK WHEN IT'S DONE.
YEAH.
AND I SAID, YOU KNOW, YOU GOT THIS THING.
AND THE OTHER END, LET'S GET THE OTHER END HERE.
YOU BET.
BECAUSE THAT WOULD COME OVER HERE.
YUP.
AND THAT'S IT.
SO, WE COULD PUT ON THE BACK WITH TONGUE AND GROOVE BOARDS.
I'M LOSING IT UP FRONT THERE, THERE YOU GO.
YEP, WE'RE HALFWAY THERE.
ALL RIGHT, THERE WE ARE.
TONGUE AND GROOVE BOARDS, AND DOVETAIL IN THE BOTTOM BOARD TO MAKE THE LID, AND LET'S LOOK AT THE LID ON YOURS.
THAT IS AN INTERESTING CONNECTION THERE.
BREAD BOARD, BREAD BOARD.
YEAH.
YOU'VE GOT THIS LID, AND WHAT'S THE PURPOSE OF CHANGING THE GRAIN DIRECTION HERE?
YEAH, WELL, THIS IS ONE BIG, LIKE, 16-INCH WIDE PIECE OF PINE, AND SO IT CAN WARP A LITTLE BIT.
SO, THE BREAD BOARD HELPS KEEP IT FLAT.
I GOT YOU.
IT ALSO, YOU KNOW CONCEALS THE END GRAIN.
SOME PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THE LOOK OF END GRAIN, AND THAT'S SORT OF THE FANCY WAY TO DO THIS ON THE DUTCH CHEST, BUT THERE'S A LESS FANCY WAY.
YOU CAN DO IT WITH JUST PUT BATTENS OR SOMETHING ON THERE.
UH HUH.
WOW.
AND I CAN SEE THE TONGUE COMING THROUGH HERE, ON THIS END RIGHT HERE, AND THEN YOU'VE MOLDED IT, AND YOU'VE PAINTED IT.
YOU PAINTED IT BLACK.
YEAH, WHICH IS SORT OF AN ENGLISH THING.
MOST OF THESE DUTCH CHESTS WERE KIND OF A CHALKY BLUE.
OH.
BUT I COULDN'T GO THERE.
NO?
OKAY, YOU HAD TO DO IT, AND PUT YOUR OWN SYMBOL ON TOP OF THERE!
WELL, THAT'S IT.
WELL, I KNEW I HAD SOMETHING TO GET OFF MY CHEST, AND NOW, I'VE GOT ONE I CAN SLIDE RIGHT ON DOWN, AND OFF THE FACE.
THE DUTCH CHEST.
[LAUGHING] CHRISTOPHER SCHWARZ, THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN.
I SURE APPRECIATE IT.
THANK YOU, ROY!
ALL RIGHT, AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.
