Last year, 45 percent of Boston Marathon runners were women. 50 years ago, there was one. Until 1972, women weren’t allowed to compete in the Boston Marathon until 1972. Bobbi Gibb was the first woman to finish the race, sneaking on to the course in 1966. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the historic occasion.
